Moonstone: The Light of the Moon Within a Stone

A Stone of Silvery Light

The moonstone is a special kind of stone, deserving of a unique space in one’s home. It has a silvery light that seems to come from within, and is often associated with the gentle glow of the moon.

This gem has long been used as a talisman for fertility, love, protection, and sleep. Personally, I really feel like I need a bit of each of these right now, to replenish my energy. Moonstone has also been linked to good luck, and to be honest, it truly seems to work.

I once gave the love of my life a moonstone in its raw, unpolished form. Since he placed it near his computer, the number of followers on his streaming page has nearly doubled in just two weeks.

The Science Behind the Moonstone

The moonstone is a sodium potassium aluminum silicate ((Na,K)AlSi₃O₈) belonging to the feldspar group, or aluminum silicate minerals. Another name for moonstone is Hecatolite, derived from Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic and witchcraft.

The name “moonstone” comes from its unique optical quality — the adularescence or schiller effect — which produces the blue, milky glow inside the stone. This effect occurs when light diffracts through the different layers within the mineral.

Some polished moonstones even show a “cat’s eye” effect, where a dark, straight streak appears across the surface.

Moonstone is found in Armenia, Australia, the Austrian Alps, Mexico, Madagascar, Myanmar, Norway, Poland, India, the United States, and Sri Lanka. The most valuable moonstones come from Myanmar, but the most common commercial varieties are from Sri Lanka.

Since ancient times, the moonstone’s most popular use has been in jewelry. It rose to prominence again during the Art Nouveau period, thanks to French goldsmith René Lalique, who helped bring it back into fashion.

The Spirit of Stones

When choosing a certain mineral, it’s important to remember that they have a kind of life of their own. They have a beginning, an evolution, and a death. They have lived through centuries of history and, in a way, they know people better than people know themselves.

That’s why I often believe that rocks and minerals choose us, not the other way around.

Who Should Choose the Moonstone?

So, who should choose the moonstone?

If you are a woman in search of new beginnings, then it is for you.
If you are a woman seeking to reawaken your divine feminine energy, then the moonstone is for you.
If you are emotionally hurt, it will help rebalance your energy and set you on your new path.
If you have a pregnant friend, the moonstone makes a perfect gift — it is said to enhance fertility and protection.

Regarding astrology, moonstone has the most affinity with Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, and Pisces. It is also an excellent talisman for night travelers and sailors, guiding them safely when there is no moonlight.

Whatever the reason you feel drawn to it, do your research — and more importantly, let yourself be chosen.
